Our HISTORY

Opening in 1927 as Cunning Company Co., Inc, the firm operated for over 80 years as is. In 2008, Ted Smith purchased the insurance book of business and started Cunning Insurance Co., Inc. In 2019, Ted changed the name to Ringgold Insurance Services, and it remains under RIS today. 

In August of 2022, Ted made the decision to partner with his daughter, Renda Smith, and First MainStreet Insurance in order to bring additional resources to the Ringgold client community. 
First MainStreet Insurance L.C. (FMSI), headquartered in Cedar Rapids, IA, is an organization that was established in 2017 when like minded individuals recognized the value for sustaining the small town insurance agency and its local legacy. The FMSI model focuses on smaller agencies, a lot of them family-run organizations, to perpetuate their business while giving them access to robust resources and carrier markets to better service their clients.

With the support of FMSI, Ringgold Insurance Services gained additional carrier and market resources to further their best-in-class service. Ted remains active in the business, alongside Renda serving as a local owner. Together they maintain the firm’s local presence and activity in the community while providing the attention clients expect from a local agent.
